Enigma - 05/31/96
ENIGMA - Issue #2 - 5/31/96
----------------- WELCOME -----------------
Welcome to the second issue of Enigma - The Official Newsletter of the Mysterious & Unexplained.
Several of you who subscribed after May 15th received a confirmation stating that your first issue would be sent on May 15th. That was obviously a mistake and this is your first issue. I apologize for the confusion.
In this issue you’ll find information about the addition to the site, brief news stories, and a focus on the Usenet Groups which hold discussions on topics related to the mysterious and unexplained.
Comments and suggestions as always are encouraged. Enjoy your surfing.
Sincerely,
Bradley Keyes
--------------------------- NEW TO THE SITE ---------------------------
INFORMATION REQUESTS SECTION
Since site of The Mysterious & Unexplained started, I've gotten many requests for information about topics not yet covered on the site. For some of the requests, I haven't been able to find any information. So, I've added an Information Requests section to the site where I will place any requests for information which I couldn't fill or for which the requester wishes to communicate with other people. If you are looking for specific information about a topic send me an e-mail and place your request in this section. Each request will also be published in the next edition of "Enigma".
If you have a deadline for when the information is needed please include this in the request.
Send your requests to:
InfoRequest@activemind.com
GENERAL MEDIAGRAPHY, LINKS and CONTACTS ADDED
On the site's table of contents you'll now find links to pages for general mediagraphy, links and contacts pages. By general I mean items (links, books, organizations, etc.) that are overviews of mysterious and unexplained phenomena. Take a look at the General Links for other online sources for information on the mysterious and unexplained.
----------------------------------------------- NEW INFORMATION REQUESTS -----------------------------------------------
Do you have any information on...
New Orleans Swamp Monsters?
I am currently doing research for an article in New Orleans and mysterious happenings. I have tons of material on ghosts and Voodoo, but none on monsters. It seems that in the recesses of my memory there is a creature, much like a big foot story, of the swamps of New Orleans. If anyone has any information on such creature stories, I desperately need it.
Thanx for your time
Rich

----------------------------------------------------------- GET THOSE OAK ISLAND QUESTIONS IN -----------------------------------------------------------
As mentioned in the last issue of "Enigma", I'm collecting questions about Oak Island and the Money Pit for an interview with Bill Milstead, a 30-year veteran of the search. I'll be collecting questions for the next two weeks and then I'll organize them and turn them over to Bill. The answers will be sent out in a future version of this newsletter and posted online.
If you have ANY questions about Oak Island, the search, or the searchers please send them to:
OakIslandQuestions@activemind.com
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLOSE CALL WITH A NEWLY DISCOVERED ASTEROID -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the past year astronomers have discovered several huge comets and asteroids which pass within scary distances of Earth. The latest discovery was made on May 15th by Timothy Spahr, an astronomy graduate student at the University of Florida.
Spahr discovered an asteroid a third of a mile across (just over half a kilometer) that passed within 279,000 miles (450 km) of the Earth on May 19th. By comparison, the Moon orbits between 221,000 and 252,000 miles (between 355 and 405 km) from the Earth.
If an asteroid such as this were to hit the Earth, the impact would release almost as much energy as all the world's nuclear weapons combined. The effects would be catastrophic.
---
Comets and asteroids, both impacts and sightings, have played major roles in evolution and mythology. Future issues of "Enigma" and the site of The Mysterious & Unexplained will begin to explore related topics such as: the extinction of the dinosaurs, the Tunguska explosion, doomsday predications, and the writings and theories of Immanuel Velikovsky. Stay tuned!
------------------------------------------------- PYRAMIDS & ORION MYSTERY -------------------------------------------------
Those of you who are interested in the Egyptian pyramids should take a look at a web site about a new book called The Orion Mystery which links the layout of the pyramids with the constellation of Orion. The theory looks interesting but I haven't gotten into the detail yet. You can find the site at:

------------------------- USENET GROUPS -------------------------
For those not familiar with Usenet Groups on the Internet, they are discussion areas covering various topics where you can respond to and leave messages. The messages and responses are referred to as postings. Within a single newsgroup there can be, an usually are, many different conversations, or threads, taking place at one time.
Also referred to as newsgroups, most of these areas are unmoderated, meaning anyone can post anything they want. Some groups are moderated and all postings are submitted to a moderator who checks that they include information relevant to the subject.
Due to the openness of the unmoderated groups there tends to be a lot of garbage in many areas - either a lot of postings completely unrelated to the topic, or people more interested in insulting each other rather than holding intelligent conversations.
Some people enjoy these groups, others find them a waste of time. If you've never tried them before, give them a chance and see how they work. Most web browsers have newsgroup capabilities built in. You also need to make sure your service provider includes access to the newsgroups with your Internet account.
Note: if you access the net through your company, many companies block all or some newsgroups so you may not have access.
Below you'll find a list of the Usenet Groups that I've found which are related in some way to the topics on The Mysterious & Unexplained. You'll also find each of these on the various Links pages on the site along with a brief description of its subject matter.
To access these groups through your browser you generally need to type:
news:{the name of the Usenet Group}as the URL
i.e.: for alt.mythology, you need to type news:alt.mythology in the URL box of your browser.
If you'd like more information about Usenet Groups take a look at the Usenet Info Center Launch Pad at:
