Enigma - 09/03/96

ENIGMA - Issue #4 - 9/3/96 (sorry for the slight delay due to Labor Day holiday)

-----------------
WELCOME
-----------------

Welcome to the fourth issue of Enigma - The Official Newsletter of the Mysterious & Unexplained.

As many of you already know, my site made Yahoo!'s Picks of the Day for August 15th. The result has been a flood of subscriptions and questions. Volume has gone up about 10 fold since that date.

I do intend to respond to ALL of your specific questions, but it may take me a few weeks to get all the answers out. Please bear with me.

The Oak Island interview will not be part of this issue of Enigma. Instead, it will be sent out sometime in the middle of this month as a special edition.

Comments and suggestions as always are encouraged.

Sincerely,

Bradley Keyes

BACK ISSUES of ENIGMA

For those of you who have requested it, all the past issues of Enigma are now online in the Enigma section of the site - http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Enigma.

Each full issue is there in text only format. However, I've taken many of the articles from each issue and placed HTML versions of each within the topic areas which they cover.

SEARCH FOR THE TOMB and TREASURE of GENGHIS KHAN
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the late 12th century through the early 13th, Genghis Khan united the tribes of Mongolia and proceeded to conquer half of the known world. He ruled an empire which stretched from the Pacific coast of China to Iran, from southern Russia into India.

Little original writing remains from his times. Most information about him is from second, third, and fourth hand sources. Details about his rise to power and his rule are sketchy and information about his death is often contradictory.

Some believe that when Genghis Khan died, his body was left to the desert sands, a traditional practice at the time. Others believe he was buried in a secret place of great importance to him along with forty horses meant to accompany him to the afterlife. One man in particular, Maury Kravitz, a Chicago commodities trader and Khan scholar, also believes that Khan was buried in a secret place. However, Kravitz believes that Khan was buried with a vast fortune collected during his conquests and reign.

No tomb has ever been found and few artifacts from the Khan's conquests have been discovered. To Kravitz, this is a strong indication that Khan was indeed buried with his spoils of war.

Maury Kravitz has spent the last couple years planning and organizing a multi-year search for the tomb and treasure. According to his plan, he should now be in Mongolia carrying out his life-long dream of finding the tomb and treasure of Genghis Khan.

Though his theory is doubted by most experts, Kravitz has the hope, dedication, and enthusiasm of Howard Carter and Heinrich Schliemann - two others who were also doubted by the experts.

LIFE on MARS - ANTARCTICA METEORITE
-----------------------------------------------------------

As many of you probably heard, on August 7th, NASA announced the discovery of evidence which MAY prove that primitive life once existed on Mars.

A meteorite discovered in Antarctica in 1984 has recently been examined and appears to contain evidence of primitive single-cell life from Mars. The meteorite apparently was ejected from Mars in an asteroid crash about 15 million years ago and landed in Antarctica around 13,000 years ago. The fossilized bacteria are estimated to be 3.6 billion years old.

When I heard the news, my first question was ‘How can scientists tell that the meteorite was actually from Mars?". Then again, how can they tell how old it is?

NASA has an excellent site which attempts to answer these and other questions. The site contains pictures, movies, press releases, and analysis of the findings. Go to:

Evidence of Primitive Life From Mars - http://cu-ames.arc.nasa.gov/marslife/

If the findings of life are verified, it would be one of the greatest discoveries of all time - imagine, life existing on another planet! It would bring us one step closer to finding evidence of intelligent life somewhere else in the universe.

URBAN FOLKLORE SITE
----------------------------------

Folklore - The traditional beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of a people, transmitted orally (Definition from Microsoft Bookshelf 1996 and The American Heritage Dictionary of English Language, Third Edition).

Folklore has existed since the creation of speech. Many of topics found on the site of the Mysterious and Unexplained could be classified as modern day folklore such as UFOs, crop circles, Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness Monster. Though the stories are relayed nowadays by more ways than speech, and are not limited to a people of one race or creed, the legends and possibilities still ignite our curiosity.

Don’t miss The Urban Legends Archive at:

http://www.urbanlegends.com/

The site is a collection of articles and Usenet postings (from alt.folklore.urban and other groups) about numerous modern folk tales. It’s an entertaining site well worth the visit.
